Computational simulations of second language construction learning

چکیده
There are few computational models of second language acquisition (SLA). At the same time, many questions in the field of SLA remain unanswered. In particular, SLA patterns are difficult to study due to the large amount of variation between human learners. We present a computational model of second language construction learning that allows manipulating specific parameters such as age of onset and amount of exposure. We use the model to study general developmental patterns of SLA and two specific effects sometimes found in empirical studies: construction priming and a facilitatory effect of skewed frequencies in the input. Our simulations replicate the expected SLA patterns as well as the two effects. Our model can be used in further studies of various

On the Impact of Two Input-Oriented Techniques and Perceptual Learning Styles on Causative Construction Development: The Case of Iranian Learners of English
This study sought to investigate the effect of the two input types interactionally modified input (IM) and textual input enhancement (TIE), the impact of a commonly used learning styles taxonomy as the Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic learning styles (VAK) by itself as well as the interactional effect of perceptual learning styles and input types on the causative construction development of EFL...
متن کاملBook Review: "Learning Strategy Instruction in the Language Classroom: Issues and Implementation"
Language learning strategies, “the techniques or devices which a learner may use to acquire knowledge” (Rubin, 1975, p. 43) or more pertinently “complex, dynamic thoughts and actions, selected and used by learners with some degree of consciousness in specific contexts” (Oxford, 2017, p. 48), have been widely researched and discussed for more than forty years since the mid-1970s. Shifting the fo...
متن کاملThe effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction: Implications for online learning
This study investigated the effect of language complexity and group size on knowledge construction in two online debates. Knowledge construction was assessed using Gunawardena et al.’s Interaction Analysis Model (1997). Language complexity was determined by dividing the number of unique words by total words. It refers to the lexical variation. The results showed that...
متن کاملA Second Language Acquisition Model Using Example Generalization And Concept Categories
We present a computational model of acquiring a second language from example sentences. Our learning algorithms build a construction grammar language model, and generalize using form-based patterns and the learner’s conceptual system. We use a unique professional language learning corpus, and show that substantial reliable learning can be achieved even though the corpus is very small. The model...
متن کاملConcept Revision of Age, Motivation, and Error Correction in Second Language Learning
The current review article investigates some variables contributing to English language teaching and learning. Three factors of age, motivation and error correction have been of importance in English language curricula in language centres. Some studies have been conducted to investigate various effects of these three components on English language acquisition, those studies, however, may lack d...
